Cambodia has received a funding assistance from ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF) through ASEAN Regional Mine Action Centre (ARMAC) to support the victims of mines or explosive remnants of war in the country.

The assistance agreement was signed this morning by the senior representatives from Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) and from the ARMAC.

The funding assistance was provided under ARMAC’s co-implementation of the project to enhance victim assistance programme in the ASEAN member states.

It is the second round cooperation between CMAA and ARMAC since 2018 when a memorandum of understanding on general cooperation between the two units was signed.

According to H.E. Ly Thuch, CMAA First Vice President, the ARMAC was created on the initiative of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, proposed at the 21st ASEAN Summit in 2012 in Phnom Penh.

The project greatly benefits ASEAN members affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war in addressing the challenges in their operations and promotes the role and responsibilities of relevant mine action units in ASEAN member countries, he added.

H.E. Ly Thuch thanked the Government and people of the Republic of Korea for their contribution through the AKCF to mine actions in Cambodia and the ASEAN, underscoring the Republic of Korea's unwavering commitment to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN.

Bilaterally, the Republic of Korea has also provided about US$10 million for demining project and support for the victims in Cambodia running until 2025.
