China Grants US$2.5 Million for Mine Clearance Operations in Cambodia

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has decided to provide US$2.5 million in grant for the Royal Government of Cambodia to support landmine and ERW clearance activities for the whole year 2022.

The grant was made known this afternoon by H.E. Heng Ratana, Director General of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC).

Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Stung Treng, Siem Reap and Kampong Thom are the targeted provinces for the one-year grant project, he pointed out.

H.E. Heng Ratana continued that the project is expected to clear more than 1,700 hectares of land from landmines and ERW, and boost education activities to raise mine risk awareness in seven provinces.

The CMAC director general expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government and people for the humanitarian support.

According to H.E. Heng Ratana, in the first half of 2021, China-funded project has cleared nearly 1,083 hectares of land, destroying over 5,000 landmines and ERW.

Cambodia has set a goal to become a mine-free nation by 2025.
