20th Francophonie Summit Venue Shifted from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh

Phnom penh: Phnom Penh capital will host the 20th Francophonie Summit in November this year, stated the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, in a statement released this evening, the spokesperson explained that the 20th Francophonie Summit, initially scheduled to be held in Siem Reap, has been moved to Phnom Penh in order to ensure optimal conditions for the organisation and participation of the summit and several side events.

The statement highlighted that this historic and milestone event will bring together the leaders and representatives of Member States of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), as well as numerous partner institutions.

The summit aims to foster dialogue, exchange views, and explore concrete solutions to global challenges related to peace and sustainable development, which are top priorities for OIF members, it added.

The Francophonie Summit is the highest decision-making authority within the Francophonie framework. Held every two years, it brings together leaders from all member states to discuss cooperation, cultural exchange, and shared values.

The Francophonie was officially established on Mar. 20, 1970. Cambodia first joined as an observer at the 4th Francophonie Summit in Chaillot, Paris, in November 1991, and became a full member at the 5th Summit in Grand-Baie, Mauritius, in October 1993.

Today, the International Organisation of La Francophonie comprises 90 member states and governments, including 53 members, five associate members, and 32 observers.

The upcoming summit is widely seen as a prestigious opportunity for Cambodia to showcase its rich cultural heritage, diplomatic engagement, and commitment to the values of Francophonie on the global stage.
