Agriculture Minister: Food Security Ensured in Cambodia

Despite natural disasters such as flood, drought and storms, Cambodia still can ensure food security for its own population of more than 15 million.

H.E. Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, expressed the pride while presiding over the celebration of the World Food Day 2019 held in Kandieng district, Pursat province this morning, under the theme "Our Action are our Future. Healthy diets for a #Zero Hunger World".

"Cambodia has experienced food surplus since 1995," underlined H.E. Minister, pointing out that until the first week of October 2019, the nationwide rice cultivation achieved almost 105 percent of the yearly plan of 2,586,152 hectares.

Labour force in Cambodia's agriculture sector has seen a considerable drop, from 80 percent in 1993 to 37 percent in 2017, and to an expected 25 percent in 2030, he added.

H.E. Veng Sakhon attributed the reduction of labour force in the agriculture field to the agricultural mechanisation, saying that ploughing with cattle remains now only at 1.17 percent while that with machinery reached 98.83 percent.

Meanwhile, for the first nine months of this year, Cambodia exported more than 3 million tons of diverse agricultural products, and imported about 1.6 million tons.
