The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports this morning issued a directive advising the educational institutions at all levels throughout Cambodia, both public and private, to take early Khmer New Year holidays.
The measure, coming into effect from Mar. 16 onwards until further notice, is aimed to urgently prevent and contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, underlined the directive.
The Municipal and Provincial Departments of Education, Youth and Sports are required to appoint each a COVID-19 prevention working group to monitor and report any possible case happened on education staff and students to the ministry every day.
The ministry also asked parents and guardians to encourage their children to apply auto-learning at home and to take good care of them and avoid potential high-risk areas for COVID-19 such as public swimming pool, fitness centre, playground, etc.
Cambodia has currently 12 confirmed cases of COVID-19 – a Chinese tourist who had been successfully cured and returned to his home country, a Cambodian man in Siem Reap province, three British tourists, a Canadian man, a Belgian man, a French man and his four-month-old baby, a Cambodian man returning from France, and two Cambodian Muslims in Preah Vihear province who returned from a religious event in Malaysia.
All the confirmed cases are imported cases, except the one in Siem Reap province who was in direct contact with a Japanese infected man. So far, there is no sign of community transmission in Cambodia.
On Mar. 14, the ministry made similar announcement, but only for general education institutions in Phnom Penh capital and Siem Reap provincial city.
