Cambodia to Host 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Environment in Siem Reap Next Week

The Ministry of Environment of Cambodia is going to host the 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME) and Related Meetings in Siem Reap province next week, according to a press release issued yesterday.

The 15th AMME and Related Meetings in 2019, scheduled to take place from Oct. 7 to 11, will discuss a wide range of issues of regional cooperation on the environment including climate change, environmentally sustainable city, biodiversity conservation, coastal and marine environment, environmental education, water resource management, chemical and hazardous waste management, transboundary haze pollution control and eco-schools.

The meeting will review and approve three important documents namely: (1) the Draft ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change to the 25th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25-UNFCCC), (2) the Draft ASEAN Strategic Plan on the Environment, and (3) the Request to designate 5 National Parks in Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam as ASEAN Heritage Parks.

Furthermore, three related meetings will be held back to back with the 15th AMME. They are (1) the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, (2) the ASEAN-Japan Ministerial Dialogue on the Environmental Cooperation to review the progress of on-going cooperation, and recent initiatives, such as the verification system of environmental technology, technology transfer, and marine plastic waste, and (3) the 16th ASEAN Plus 3 Environment Ministers Meeting. Moreover, Cambodia also organises the 3rd ASEAN Eco-Schools Award, and the 1st ASEAN Youth Eco-Champions Award ceremony, for all ASEAN Members.

To mark the launching of the ASEAN Green Initiatives, the participants of the meetings will also participate in a ceremony to plant Kravan flowers in front of Angkor Wat Temple.

The AMME is held biennially with the aim of discussing the environmental cooperation in the region. The 14th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment and Related Meetings were held in September 2017 Brunei.
