Cambodia Voices Concerns over Tension in Taiwan Strait

The spokesperson of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings H.E. Kung Phoak has shared Cambodia’s concerns over the tension in Taiwan Strait as the U.S. House Speaker H.E. Ms. Nancy Pelosi is expected to pay a visit to Taiwan.

“We are concerned by the growing tension in the Taiwan Strait. We don’t want to see that because the world is facing multiple crises. At the same time, we are still recovering from the pandemic and now there is also security situation in the region and outside the region, and the economic recession is also around the corner,” said H.E. Kung Phoak, also Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

“Cambodia’s position is very consistent, we respect the One China policy, and we hope that all parties would adhere to the principles and the key documents they have already agreed on,” he underlined.

H.E. Kung Phoak said what Cambodia wanted to see now is the de-escalation of the tension there, and Cambodia hoped that all sides will engage in a peaceful, constructive dialogue because we don’t think that the act of war or the use of violence or the escalation of tension will bring us closer to the solution of this crisis.

Cambodia continued to urge all conflicting parties or all parties to engage in a constructive, peaceful, friendly and open manner, he added.

Currently, the tension is spiking ahead H.E. Ms. Nancy Pelosi’s expected visit to Taiwan – the claim territory by China under One China Policy.
