Cellcard, one of the leading telecommunication companies in Cambodia, launched here Thursday a trial of 5G, the latest generation wireless technology for digital cellular network.
The successful trial of 5G made the company become the fifth company in the sector focusing on development of 5G in Cambodia.
H.E. Tram Iv Tek, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, said the 5G technology development contributes to supporting the government's digital economy.
5G will be the leading technology to boost the country's economy and at the same time we have to be ready to take advantage of its benefits and ensure that the technology really supports the country's economic development, as well as promotes domestic industrial sector," he underlined.
We want Cambodia to be a 5G technology emerging country in the ASEAN and to all companies who want to be at the forefront of this technology, H.E. Tram Iv Tek added.
Four other telecom operators � Smart Axiata, Cam GSM (Known as Cellcard), Metfone, and Yes Seatel � also used to conduct 5G pilot trials.
There were 22 million mobile phone subscribers at the six mobile operators by the end of 2019, while internet subscribers hit 16.5 million, according to the Telecommunication Regulator Cambodia's statistics.
