The Conference on "Resilient City: Thinking about Challenges and Urban Reconstruction" kicked off this morning at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel under the chairmanship of H.E. Khuong Sreng, Phnom Penh Municipal Governor and Mr. Pierre Baillet, Permanent Secretary of the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF).
H.E. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and former Governor of Phnom Penh; and H.E. Pa Socheatevong, Municipal Council Chairman and former Governor of Phnom Penh, were also present at the conference organised as part of the 39th General Assembly of AIMF.
In his opening address, H.E. Khuong Sreng expressed warm welcome to the delegates from AIMF member cities. According to the governor, Phnom Penh has undergone remarkable urban development and at the same time challenges which are also faced by other capitals.
For his part, H.E. Thong Khon shared his experience as a former Governor of Phnom Penh that the capital city was rebuilt with difficulty after it was abandoned during the Khmer Rouge regime.
The theme "Resilient City: Thinking about Challenges and Urban Reconstruction" is well suited to the current context of the capital city of Phnom Penh, said H.E. Pa Socheatevong, adding that the revival of the capital after the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime is an extraordinary phenomenon.
Some 400 delegates from 140 cities in 41 countries will attend the 39th General Assembly of AIMF hosted by Cambodia on Dec. 3-4, 2019.
