Expansion of Sihanoukville International Airport Planned

Cambodia Airports plans to expand terminal facilities in Sihanoukville International Airport that will allow it to handle 10 million passengers a year.

The master plan for terminal expansion was approved by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation in a meeting yesterday between H.E. Mao Havannall, minister in charge of the SSCA and Mr. Alain Brun, new CEO of the Cambodia Airports.

As guided by the plan, the first-step of construction of the facility is set to start earlier next year and it will enable the handing of 3.6 million passengers annually.

The second phase of the construction will start in 2022 and once done, it will allow the capacity to handle 10 million passengers per year.

The expansion of terminal capacity was planned in line with effort of Cambodia Airports to upgrade the runway of Sihanoukville International Airport from 2,500 metres to 3,300 metres in length.

The runway expansion is expected to be completed in 2020, to handle of landing and take-off of long haul aircrafts.

According to the figures from Cambodia Airports the company authorised to manage three international airports in Cambodia shows that the number of passengers through the Sihanoukville International Airport rose by 210 percent in the first half of this year, to 755,000.

Expansion plan of terminal facilities at the airport is also to get ready for the ASEAN Summit that Cambodia will host in 2022 in Preah Sihanouk province, and long haul aircrafts of world leaders are expected to land and take off at the airport.

Last year, Cambodia's international airports reached a significant milestone, having handled a total of 10 million passengers.
