Extreme Drought Seen Intensifying in Northeast Cambodia

The extreme drought around the Sekong, Sesan and Srepok rivers in northeast Cambodia is forecast to intensify this week, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) says.

In its latest forecast, the MRC Flood and Drought Management Centre in Phnom Penh said the extreme drought would expand to large areas of Rattanakiri and Stung Treng provinces and part of southern Laos by Sunday.

Severe drought is forecast in Kratie and Mondulkiri provinces and the Central Highland of Vietnam.

Elsewhere in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB), moderate drought conditions are forecast for central Laos and adjacent areas in northeast Thailand by Sunday.

“Low density rainfall in July is the main factor causing deficit soil moisture in the two driest areas of the LMB during the forecasting week,” the centre said.
