KOICA Holds Pre-departure Orientation for 14 new Scholars for 2021

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) held a pre-departure orientation for the Cambodian government officials selected to get the master’s degree scholarship programme for the academic year 2021-2023.

The orientation was held under the presidency of Mr. Rho Hyun Jun, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, and H.E. Im Sour, Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodian Rehabilitation and Development Board of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CRDB/CDC), and the President of Cambodia-Korea Alumni Association (CAMKAA).

According to a KOICA’s press release AKP received this evening, with a mission to support human resources development (HRD) in partner countries, KOICA invites talented people from Cambodia and helps them gain professional and systematic knowledge that will play a key role in Cambodia.

As a part of KOICA’s CIAT (Capacity Improvement & Advancement for Tomorrow), the programme aims to share Korea’s experience and knowledge with foreign government officials by providing them opportunity to study their fields of interest in the Republic of Korea.

The KOICA Scholarship Programme is one of the prestigious fully-funded scholarship schemes provided by the Government of the Republic of Korea to KOICA’s partner countries. The programme started in Cambodia in 1994 and aims to share Korea’s unique development experiences and knowledge with Cambodia and contribute to Cambodia’s long-term development needs.

To accomplish this mission, KOICA has been operating master’s degree programme with leading 20 Korean universities in the fields of agriculture, rural development, education, government and technology, environment and energy. For this year, a total of 14 scholars passed master’s degree courses with leading 8 Korean universities.

Country Director of KOICA Cambodia Office, Mr. Rho Hyun Jun, welcomed and congratulated the scholars. He said that KOICA has pledged to continue assisting Cambodia in capacity building of its officials by providing more scholarships and training courses, despite the COVID-19 threat.

For his part, H.E. Im Sour encouraged the participants to take this excellent opportunity learning from Korea’s development during their stay and sharing their knowledge, know-how, and experiences with Cambodian people and applying the lessons learned through this master’s degree programme to their works for the sustainable socio-economic development of Cambodia.

During the event of orientation, KOICA Cambodia Office briefly introduced the master’s degree courses and gave the participants basic orientation on 1) – KOICA Scholarship guidelines, 2)- Tips for life in Korea, 3)-Information about Cambodia Korea Alumni Association (CAMKAA), and 4)-Code of Conduct on Integrity, and Sexual Harassment.

The selected scholars showed their gratitude and assure their support for KOICA and the Korean government, and committed to bring social and policy reforms in Cambodia after gaining experience and learning in Korea.

KOICA will continue to support and implement programmes in the Cambodia that target the development of human resources.

From 1994 to 2020, KOICA Cambodia Office supported 3,182 trainees in total. Among them, there are 193 are scholarship programme trainees and 14 more trainees received the chance for the Master’s degree course this year.
