PM Reiterates Commitment for Peace in Myanmar during Cambodia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, this morning reaffirmed his commitment for peace in Myanmar during his mandate as the Chair of ASEAN.

Myanmar’s crisis is very complicated as it has happened for around 70 years ago, therefore it would not be settled just with only a day-long visit, said the Premier at the inauguration ceremony for the official use of National Road No. 7 Rehabilitation Project from Klastus in Kratie provincial city to Romeat district, Kratie province.

“I don’t have any benefit from my commitment to solve Myanmar’s crisis, but what I want is peace, not war […]. I want to see the ceasefire happen in Myanmar, […],” he underlined.

“I will not drop my commitment for the peace in Myanmar based on the Five-Point Consensus in Jakarta. I want political prisoners to be released, ceasefire, assistance, and dialogue there,” he added.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also welcomed the release of economist Sean Turnell who has been detained by Myanmar's military junta for the past year, after the Cambodian Prime Minister requested to H.E. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council of Myanmar in January.

Sean Turnell is an Australian economics professor working as an adviser to Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi. He was arrested in February 2021, just days after a military coup.
