Restoration of Ta Prohm’s East Gate is 35 Percent Complete

The renovation project of the east gate of Ta Prohm Temple is 35 percent complete as of mid-October, and is scheduled to be fully completed by 2023, according to the APSARA National Authority (ANA).

The team is currently restoring and installing stones in the north, south, and the roof, and about 50 percent of the roof has been restored, it added.

As for the restoration process, Ms. Net Simon, Archaeologist of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, explained that all the stones had to be moved to repair, and the team needed to strengthen the foundation and re-arrange the stones. A small number of stones are fragile and some are missing, requiring only a small amount of new stones.

ANA, in cooperation with Indian institutions and with the approval of the ICC-Angkor, began in early 2022 to renovate the east gate, which was so dilapidated that the structure of the gate was tilted, posing a high risk to tourists.
