Thbong Khmum to Become a Mine-free Province in Six Months

Thbong Khmum province will obtain the mine-free status within six months after the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines, and ERW Clearance (NPMEC) will start the demining operations in the province on July 15, 2022.

Yesterday, NPMEC signed a mine clearance contract with the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), under the witness of H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister, First Vice President of CMAA.

The signing ceremony marked the beginning of operation to clear all landmines in Thbong Khmum province under the Samdech Techo Project for Mine Action (STP-MA) themed “Providing Safe Ground, Creating smiles”, underlined H.E. Ly Thuch.

According to H.E. Senior Minister, a total of 3,984,219 square metres of landmine contaminated land needs to be cleared before declaring Thbong Khmum a mine-free province, he said.

Once cleared, Thbong Khmum will become the third Cambodian province without landmine, after Kep and Prey Veng.

Recently, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has appealed for national movement to contribute to achieving the Kingdom’s goal of becoming a mine-free nation by 2025.
