Cambodia and Japan have appreciated their good bilateral cooperation, mainly in the field of mine clearance.
The appreciation was made during a visit by a group of students from Chuo University, Japan led by Professor Hanatani Atsushi to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC)’s headquarters in Phnom Penh on Sept. 6.
According to CMAC, the purpose of this study tour was to learn about the operational activities of CMAC as well as the post-clearance development.
After having known about the operations, achievements and activities, Professor Hanatani Atsushi thanked CMAC for its good cooperation with Japan, one of main donors in the field of demining activities, and for always enabling Japanese students to visit, explore and learn about the field of mine action.
CMAC was established during the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1992, in order to assist the safe return of thousands of refugees to their homelands across the country. CMAC currently has 1,715 staff across Cambodia, including a national office in Phnom Penh, six provincial demining units and a Training Centre in Kampong Chhnang, working towards the mission of "Saving lives and Supporting Development for Cambodia".
