All Legal Political Parties Free to Conduct Activities and Join Elections

Phnom penh: All legal political parties in Cambodia have full freedom to conduct political activities and participate in the upcoming elections, including the 2027 and 2028 polls, according to H.E. Chea Thyrith, Spokesperson of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Chea Thyrith made these remarks during a press conference following a meeting between CPP President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and leaders of 28 other political parties in the alliance at the January 7 Palace in Phnom Penh. He emphasized that cooperation among alliance parties is governed by principles of equality, mutual respect, and the independence and autonomy of each political party.

He pointed out that the alliance shares the common objective of serving the interests of the nation and the Cambodian people. The spokesperson reiterated that all legal political parties retain full political rights and freedoms as independent entities, even as they collaborate with the CPP within the alliance framework.

H.E. Chea Thyrith stated, 'Although they are working together with the CPP, they still have full freedom to conduct political activities and fulfill their roles as normal political parties. They are free to participate in both the 2027 and 2028 elections in accordance with the practices of political parties under the principles of liberal democracy and pluralism as stipulated in Cambodia's Constitution.'

He further explained that the alliance does not hinder the right of any member party to contest elections independently. Despite the CPP holding the largest political representation within the alliance, all parties maintain equal rights within the framework of cooperation.

Cambodia is scheduled to hold the commune/Sangkat council elections in 2027 and the general election in 2028.
