Sofia: The Association of Bulgarian Veteran Peacekeepers (ABVP) has declared its solidarity with Cambodia amidst rising tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border. The formal declaration was made on Monday, highlighting concerns over the situation in the region.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the ABVP sent a letter to the Cambodian Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo, on December 15. The letter emphasized the veteran organization's support for Cambodia's territorial rights and the preservation of its cultural heritage sites. The ABVP, composed of former personnel from the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), stressed the historical connection between Bulgaria and Cambodia, noting sacrifices made by Bulgarian peacekeepers during Cambodia's transition period in the 1990s.
The veterans underscored the importance of protecting disputed border temples, describing them as significant cultural sites. They argued that these Khmer heritage sites should be symbols of unity rather than sources of conflict. The ABVP supported Cambodia's stance on its right to security and dignity, urging both Cambodian and Thai governments to engage with United Nations frameworks and international law to resolve the dispute peacefully.
The ABVP's statement, signed by Chairman Colonel Engineer Stefan Davidov and Secretary Sergeant Ivo Hristoskov, called for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and mutual respect. The association's involvement draws attention to the international interest in maintaining stability in the region, especially from former peacekeeping community members.
The letter concluded by emphasizing the lasting friendship established during the UNTAC mission, committing to continued support for Cambodia's quest for international respect and sovereign integrity.
