Cambodia and Hungary Strengthen Parliamentary Ties Through High-Level Meeting

Phnom penh: Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, engaged in a significant meeting with Hon. Gy¶rgy Such, Director-General of the Hungarian National Assembly, to discuss the enhancement of parliamentary cooperation between the two nations.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the meeting underscored the long-standing friendship between Cambodia and Hungary, with both parties expressing hope for the deepening of bilateral ties toward a strategic partnership. The year 2026 will mark the 70th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Samdech Khuon Sudary appreciated the Hungarian National Assembly for its warm hospitality during the Cambodian parliamentary delegation's visit to Hungary last year. She emphasized the importance of peace, international cooperation, and the role of women in peacebuilding. She acknowledged Hungary's role in promoting peace and noted its bridging position between the East and the West.

Hon. Gy¶rgy Such expressed gratitude for the warm welcome in Cambodia, acknowledging the positive development of Cambodia-Hungary relations through high-level dialogue and cooperation across sectors. The establishment of the Parliamentary Friendship Groups in 2022 was highlighted as a milestone in strengthening ties.

The discussion also touched on the upcoming visit of His Majesty the King of Cambodia to Hungary, which is expected to further cement bilateral relations. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued exchanges between their parliaments and supporting each other at multilateral parliamentary forums.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the scholarship programme launched in 2014, which has facilitated Cambodian students in pursuing higher education in Hungary, enhancing educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Samdech Khuon Sudary also briefed the Hungarian delegation on the impact of recent Thai aggression on Cambodia, emphasizing the Cambodian Government's approach to addressing these challenges through dialogue and peaceful solutions. Opportunities for expanded cooperation in various fields, including trade, agriculture, and cultural exchange, were also discussed.

The National Assembly President reaffirmed the commitment to a people-centred approach in advancing Cambodia-Hungary relations, highlighting the importance of people-to-people ties and continued mutual support at regional and international platforms.
