Phnom Penh:Cambodia and Japan have enhanced their cooperation on clean and green investment to tackle global climate change. This collaboration was formalized during the 'Cambodia-Japan Space Economy ' Co-Creation' Networking Symposium and Business Matching' event held at Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the opening ceremony of the event was presided over by H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and H.E. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications. Dr. Eang Sophalleth emphasized Cambodia's commitment to climate action, noting a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2035 under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.
Cambodia and Japan are collaborating through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) to promote low-carbon technologies, including LED lighting systems, solar energy, and Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) rice cultivation projects. These initiatives aim to reduce methane emissions and create additional economic opportunities for farmers.
The Minister highlighted the role of satellite-based technologies, including the use of satellite data and remote-sensing technologies from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), to improve monitoring of environmental changes, agriculture, and land management. He encouraged investment partnerships in areas like Climate-Smart Agriculture, carbon markets, digital data systems, and other green technologies.
The forum is expected to foster new opportunities for investment cooperation and promote sustainable and resilient development between Cambodia and Japan. It gathered representatives from government ministries, the Embassy of Japan, the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), JAXA, the Japan Space Forum, and private-sector and research institutions, all focused on advancing green investment and innovative technologies to mitigate climate change.
