Cambodia and Lithuania to Tackle Disinformation and Enhance Media Collaboration

Vilnius: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo, recently embarked on an official diplomatic mission to the Republic of Lithuania. During this mission, the Ambassador presented his credentials to President H.E. Gitanas Nauseda and engaged in a series of high-level discussions with key Lithuanian officials and business leaders.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the primary goal of the visit was to strengthen bilateral relations between Cambodia and Lithuania across various sectors, including trade, political dialogue, media exchange, education, digital technology, and cultural affairs. In meetings with officials from the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo reaffirmed Cambodia's dedication to peace and international law, emphasizing the importance of peaceful conflict resolution. Drawing on its history of war and reconciliation, Cambodia maintains that peace is essential for economic development and stable international relations.

Cambodia's stance against the use of force aligns with the views expressed by Lithuanian Foreign Minister H.E. Kestutis Budrys during his visit to Cambodia in April 2026. Both countries advocate for diplomacy, dialogue, and adherence to international legal frameworks, emphasizing respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity under the principles of the United Nations Charter.

During discussions with Ms. Kristina Babiciene, Vice-Director of the Indo-Pacific Department, and Mr. Darius Skusevicius, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides exchanged insights on bilateral issues and shared regional and international interests. H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo highlighted Phnom Penh's interest in enhancing cooperation with Vilnius in areas such as trade, investment, clean energy, cybersecurity, GovTech, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

Additionally, the Cambodian delegation expressed interest in strengthening ties within the Cambodia-EU and ASEAN-EU frameworks, identifying Lithuania as a strategic partner to bridge connectivity between Southeast Asia and Europe. To this end, the Ambassador proposed establishing formal linkages between Cambodian national media outlets and Lithuanian counterparts to facilitate content sharing, professional exchanges, and journalist visits.

The two nations also discussed collaborative efforts to combat fake news and disinformation in the digital era. This includes initiatives such as fact-checking methodologies, media literacy programs, journalism training, and the use of artificial intelligence tools to detect misleading information. A notable highlight of the mission was the official presentation of credentials to Lithuanian President H.E. Gitanas Nauseda. H.E. Chea Chanboribo conveyed greetings and best wishes from His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia to the Lithuanian President and people.

Following the ceremony, discussions between the Cambodian Ambassador and President Nauseda focused on bolstering diplomatic ties and promoting long-term bilateral cooperation. The Cambodian delegation also engaged with leaders of the Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce to convert diplomatic goodwill into commercial partnerships.

Cambodia presented opportunities for exporting key agricultural products to European markets, including milled rice, cashews, pepper, coffee, and processed agricultural goods. Lithuanian investors were encouraged to explore business ventures in Cambodia, particularly in agro-industry, clean energy, FinTech, cybersecurity, and logistics. Both sides explored the potential for direct business-to-business connections and future Lithuania-Cambodia trade missions, leveraging Cambodia as a gateway to ASEAN and Lithuania as an entry point to the European Union market.
