Phnom penh: H.E. Dr. Thun Vathana, Second Vice President of the Senate, met with H.E. Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo, Ambassador of the Philippines to Cambodia, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in agriculture, industry, education, trade, and technology.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the meeting provided an opportunity for H.E. Dr. Vathana to extend his condolences to the Philippine government following an earthquake that struck the country the previous night. He also praised the growing relations between Cambodia and the Philippines, particularly after recent high-level exchanges between the Prime Minister of Cambodia and the President of the Philippines.
H.E. Dr. Vathana emphasized the significance of the Philippines within ASEAN, highlighting its essential role in promoting economic resilience and trade in the region. He noted the increased exports of Cambodian rice, grains, and other agricultural products to the Philippines as a positive development.
The discussions also covered international issues, with both parties exchanging views on regional conflicts, including ongoing tensions along the Cambodian-Thai border. Despite the existence of a ceasefire, challenges persist. H.E. Dr. Vathana reiterated Cambodia's dedication to peaceful resolutions through legal negotiations, particularly in addressing the situation of 18 Cambodian soldiers who have been detained by the Thai army since the ceasefire was established.
Both officials agreed on the necessity to capitalize on current global opportunities to further enhance their bilateral relations and achieve mutual growth in various sectors.
