Putrajaya: The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire beginning at midnight tonight, announced H.E. Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, during a press conference following a closed-door meeting in Putrajaya this afternoon.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, a joint press release read by Prime Minister Anwar outlined the consensus reached by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister H.E. Phumtham Wechayachai. The agreement includes three key points: an immediate and unconditional ceasefire effective from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28, 2025; an informal meeting of regional commanders scheduled for July 29, 2025, at 07:00 hours, followed by a meeting with Defence Attaches led by the Chair of ASEAN; and a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on August 4, 2025, to be hosted by Cambodia.
Prime Minister Anwar highlighted that Malaysia, as the current Chair of ASEAN, is prepared to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure the implementation of the ceasefire. Malaysia will also consult with fellow ASEAN Member States to participate in this observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to support peace efforts on the ground.
Both Cambodian and Thai sides have agreed to resume direct communications between their Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and Defence Ministers. The Foreign and Defence Ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been tasked with developing a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire, which will serve as a foundation for sustained peace and accountability.
The joint press release further emphasized the shared resolve of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold the principles of international law, peaceful coexistence, and multilateral cooperation in pursuing a just and lasting resolution to the situation. This special meeting was co-organised by the United States of America with active participation from the People's Republic of China, aiming to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation.
