Cambodia and UN Strengthen Partnership on Development Goals and Migrant Support

Phnom penh: Cambodia's Minister of Planning, H.E. Bin Trachhey, engaged in discussions with the newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms. Vladanka Andreeva, focusing on enhancing collaboration on national development objectives, specifically in areas concerning the support of migrant workers and the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the meeting took place at the Ministry of Planning and served as an introductory visit for Ms. Andreeva, who began her role on January 10. The session underscored the ongoing partnership between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the United Nations.

Accompanying Ms. Andreeva were representatives from various UN agencies, including Ms. Sandra Bernklau from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Mr. Will Park from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Ms. Rebekah Bells from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and Ms. Kyung-nan Park from the World Food Programme (WFP).

H.E. Trachhey commended the UN for its consistent contributions to Cambodia's socio-economic growth and reiterated the government's dedication to collaborating with the UN and other development partners to advance national development and meet the SDGs.

The dialogue also focused on the challenges faced by Cambodian migrant workers returning from abroad and the displaced communities along the Cambodia-Thailand border due to regional tensions.

H.E. Trachhey highlighted the necessity of coordinated efforts among government institutions and development partners to aid affected citizens, particularly through the provision of employment opportunities and sustainable livelihoods for returning migrants.

Ms. Andreeva expressed her empathy towards families in distress and confirmed the UN country team's commitment to supporting affected communities and assisting returning migrant workers in rebuilding their lives and reintegrating into society.

The discussions also reviewed Cambodia's progress toward the SDGs and preparations for the country's anticipated graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2029.

Ms. Andreeva mentioned that the United Nations would provide its latest SDG progress report to the Ministry of Planning to aid future policy planning.

The discussions also covered Cambodia's Smooth Transition Strategy (STS), which is intended to ensure a sustainable transition post-LDC graduation.

Additionally, they exchanged insights on preparations for Cambodia's Voluntary National Review (VNR), which is expected to be presented at the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2027.

The Ministry of Planning will oversee the coordination process with technical assistance from the United Nations.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of bolstering Cambodia's statistical systems to support evidence-based policymaking, including collaboration on surveys and national data systems.

H.E. Trachhey mentioned that the Ministry recently introduced the National Strategy for Food Fortification 2025-2030, which aims to enhance nutrition and combat malnutrition through stronger multi-sectoral partnerships.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation to support Cambodia's socio-economic development and long-term sustainability goals.
