Cambodia Raises Concerns at UN over Fragile Ceasefire with Thailand

New york: Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn has expressed gratitude for the ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, but warned that the truce remains fragile. Speaking at the High-Level Week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Prak Sokhonn emphasized the delicate nature of the situation despite both Cambodia and Thailand’s commitments to strictly comply with the ceasefire terms, rebuild trust, and restore normalcy.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Prak Sokhonn highlighted that the credibility of sincerity and trust depends on respecting both the letter and spirit of the agreements with real actions on the ground. He expressed concern over continued unilateral moves by Thailand to impose territorial sovereignty, using forces instead of agreed mechanisms, and adhering to unilateral maps rather than internationally recognized ones, undermining trust-building and peace efforts.

The Cambodian diplomat also raised alarms over the forced eviction of Cambodian civilians and threats to use national laws against them, which threaten hundreds more who have lived on these lands for decades. Such actions demonstrate a disregard not only for the ceasefire terms but also for mutual agreements on border issues. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia are compromised, infringing on the rights and dignity of its citizens.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s strict observance of the ceasefire, demonstrating transparency and restraint in its implementation, even amidst provocations. He noted a recent unprovoked attack near a sensitive site, where Cambodian forces refrained from retaliation, underscoring their commitment to peace.

Guided by the spirit that ended its internal conflict decades ago, Cambodia calls for dialogue and peaceful resolution of outstanding issues, urging adherence to the ceasefire terms, bilateral agreements, and international law, including the Charters of the United Nations and ASEAN. Cambodia seeks the support of the ASEAN Chair, member states, the UN Secretary-General, and global leaders to help de-escalate tensions, encourage peaceful resolution, and prevent further tragedy.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn emphasized Cambodia’s focus on rebuilding its economy and improving the well-being of its people, posing no threat to any country’s sovereignty. While safeguarding its independence and territorial integrity, Cambodia views the use of force as a last resort and remains committed to restoring trust, promoting harmonious coexistence, and transforming border areas into zones of peace and cooperation.
