Cambodia Submits Formal Protest Against Thai Legal Complaint Targeting Top Leaders

Cambodia: Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) has lodged a formal protest against the reported hostile action by the Secretary-General of the National Security Council of Thailand directed at the President of the Cambodian Senate and the Prime Minister of Cambodia.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this action takes the form of a legal complaint filed with a Thai local court in connection with the military operations along the Cambodia-Thailand border in 2025, the MFAIC stated in a press release issued today. 'Cambodia views this complaint against its top leaders with serious concern, as it is counterproductive to ongoing efforts to de-escalate the situation between Cambodia and Thailand and runs contrary to the spirit of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special General Border Committee Meeting held on 27 December 2025,' the press release underlined.

Such legal action is inconsistent with the purposes and principles of the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, it added, stressing that any attempt to initiate domestic legal proceedings targeting the senior leadership of a sovereign state for actions inherent to their official duties - particularly those related to national defence and territorial integrity - has no basis under international law.

'Cambodia urges Thailand to take the necessary measures to address this regrettable development, which could undermine the effective implementation of the ceasefire and de-escalation arrangements, or prejudice ongoing efforts to restore confidence and normal relations between the two countries,' concluded the MFAIC.
