Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire Marks a Turning Point in ASEAN Unity and Centrality

Phnom penh: The Asian Vision Institute (AVI) issued a statement on July 29 welcoming the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, describing it as a turning point for ASEAN unity and centrality, grounded in peace through dialogue, diplomacy, international law, and justice.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the ceasefire agreement was reached in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on July 28, 2025, during a Special Meeting chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Chair of ASEAN. The ceasefire, which took effect at midnight, is seen as a significant development in fostering ASEAN unity and centrality.

AVI expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Malaysian Prime Minister, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai for their efforts toward establishing peace. The statement also acknowledged the role played by President Donald Trump and the People's Republic of China in facilitating and monitoring the peace talks. Additionally, support from world leaders, including those from Japan and the United Kingdom, was noted in achieving this pivotal milestone.

AVI extended condolences to the families of civilian and military victims on both sides and called for humanitarian responses for dislocated refugees. The organization stressed the need for urgent relief efforts by governments, civil society organizations, and international bodies, including the United Nations and ASEAN, to provide essential aid to those affected by the conflict.

While condemning acts of aggression and violations of international law, such as the use of cluster bombs and hybrid warfare by Thailand, AVI commended both governments for their commitment to peace. The institute urged both parties to fully implement the ceasefire and to resolve disputes peacefully in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter. AVI also called for international monitoring of the ceasefire's implementation and the protection of cultural heritage sites, including the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear Temple.

Reaffirming its dedication to global peace and stability, AVI emphasized the importance of the ceasefire as a step toward rebuilding trust and fostering dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand. The agreement is seen as a significant move in reinforcing international efforts toward peace, development, and sustainability.
