Phnom Penh:With the Francophonie Summit set to take place in less than 20 days, Cambodia is gearing up to host this significant international event for the first time. The 20th Francophonie Summit and the 48th Session of the Ministerial Conference of La Francophonie (CMF) will be held in Phnom Penh on November 15-16, 2026. The event aims to unite world leaders to tackle global challenges under the theme 'Reinvest in Peace for Shared Prosperity and Lasting Stability.'
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the summit will bring together leaders from French-speaking nations to discuss international cooperation, multilateralism, and sustainable development. This historic event will also feature several major activities designed to enhance cultural ties, promote innovation, and boost economic cooperation among Francophone countries and their partners.
The Francophonie Village will take place from November 13-17, offering a glimpse into Cambodia's arts and culture through national pavilions and daily cultural performances. Additionally, FrancoTech, scheduled for November 14-16, will focus on technological advancement and economic exchanges within the Francophone community. The sixth Francophone Entrepreneurs Forum (REF) will also be held during this period to strengthen economic relations and encourage trade cooperation.
Cambodia's history with the Francophonie community dates back to the French protectorate established in 1863. Today, French retains substantial influence in the country, particularly in sectors such as healthcare, law, and the military, with about three percent of the population speaking the language.
The summit will be graced by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, who will preside over the official opening, and French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to attend. A notable event during the summit will be the royal inauguration of the West Mebon Temple, a symbol of the enduring cultural ties between Cambodia and France.
The gathering represents Cambodia's commitment to international cooperation and multilateralism, reflecting the legacy of the late King Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk, a founding figure of the Francophonie organization. The event will provide an opportunity for Cambodia to showcase its development and cultural heritage to a global audience.
