Cambodia to Host 6th Commune/Sangkat Council Election in June Next Year

Phnom penh: The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has announced the specific date for the Commune/Sangkat Council Election of the 6th mandate.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the RGC's decision, signed by Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on January 19, states that the election will take place on Sunday, June 6, 2027.

The responsibility for implementing this resolution effectively has been assigned to the Office of the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Civil Service, and other relevant ministries and institutions. The previous election, held on June 5, 2022, saw participation from 17 political parties across 23,602 polling stations. These parties included the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), Candlelight Party (CLP), FUNCINPEC Party, Khmer National United Party (KNUP), and several others, competing for 1,652 communes/Sangkat throughout Cambodia.

In the last election, the CPP secured a total of 9,376 seats, including 1,648 commune/Sangkat chief positions, 1,618 first deputy chief positions, and 261 second deputy chief positions. The Candlelight Party followed with 4 commune/Sangkat chiefs, 25 first deputy chief positions, and 1,360 second deputy chief positions. FUNCINPEC, Khmer National United Party, Grassroots Democratic Party, Cambodian National Love Party, Cambodian Youth Party, Kampucheaniyum Party, and Beehive Social Democratic Party also secured various deputy chief positions.

A total of 7,394,427 people cast their votes on June 5, 2022, which accounted for 80.32 percent of eligible voters. There were 7,237,037 valid ballots and 157,390 invalid ballots. In terms of total votes, the CPP received 5,378,773 votes, while the Candlelight Party obtained 1,610,556 votes. FUNCINPEC, Khmer National United Party, Grassroots Democratic Party, Cambodian National Love Party, Cambodian Youth Party, Kampucheaniyum Party, and Beehive Social Democratic Party received varying numbers of votes, reflecting their influence and support in the electoral process.
