The Hague:Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet has emphasized the significance of border negotiations as a vital responsibility of the Royal Government to the nation and its citizens. He underscored the necessity for negotiations to be grounded in clear documentary, legal, and technical foundations, along with thoroughness and patience to protect national sovereignty.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister stressed that border negotiations should not rely on unreliable sources such as television reports, social media, hearsay, or claims of special intuition. He highlighted that the approach to resolving disputes should depend on the circumstances and actual situation, utilizing either bilateral or international mechanisms.
For land borders, Cambodia is advancing through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to seek resolutions bilaterally. In contrast, maritime boundaries are being addressed through an international mechanism using compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Prime Minister Hun Manet also extended his best wishes to the Cambodian delegation and legal team, led by Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, for their involvement in the second meeting of the UNCLOS Conciliation Commission with Thailand. This meeting, taking place from October 14 to 18, 2026, is being held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, which hosts the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
