Phnom Penh:Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia's commitment to preserving and modernising the country's documentary heritage. This announcement was made during the official opening of an exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Archives of Cambodia.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the exhibition, held at the National Library in Sangkat Srah Chork, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh, began on Wednesday morning. The theme of the exhibition is 'Shared Memory, Stronger Identity!', reflecting the government's dedication to safeguarding Cambodia's heritage and national memory.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the exhibition has transformed the grounds of the National Archives and National Library into a public heritage space. The event, which will be open for a month, showcases the government's responsibility in preserving archival records, an invaluable national asset crucial to the country's collective memory.
Emphasising the importance of archival documents, Samdech Thipadei referenced a Khmer proverb, stating that these documents are the roots of national identity and knowledge. He stressed the need for their preservation through both physical means and digitisation to benefit future generations.
The National Archives of Cambodia, officially operational since October 1, 1926, is set to celebrate its centenary in 2026. The Prime Minister encouraged citizens, tourists, students, and researchers to explore the exhibition and its valuable collections of historical documents.
The centennial celebration also underscores the National Archives' role in preserving the country's documentary heritage as Cambodia gears up to host the 20th Francophonie Summit in 2026. The exhibition will highlight Cambodia's history and culture, showcasing the evolution of the national memory and the modernisation of digital platforms, with various activities planned within the heritage grounds.
The exhibition, open free of charge, will be accessible to students, Cambodian, and international visitors from November 4, 2026, for a full month.
