Phnom penh: H.E. Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology of Cambodia, held a working meeting in Phnom Penh on Thursday morning with Ms. Park Kyung-nan, the newly appointed Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Cambodia. The meeting aimed to explore further cooperation on enhancing climate resilience in Cambodia.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the minister welcomed Ms. Park and commended WFP for its support of initiatives in natural disaster risk management, social protection, and promoting climate-resilient nutrition in the region. He acknowledged the organisation's contributions to development and humanitarian work in Cambodia.
Minister Thor Chetha outlined his ministry's priorities, focusing on ensuring water security through the construction, restoration, and modernisation of irrigation systems. He also highlighted the importance of enhancing hydrological and meteorological services and modernising legal and policy frameworks. The minister expressed a commitment to capacity building and strengthening cooperation with development partners, showing readiness to expand collaboration with WFP in water resources and meteorology.
WFP and the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology have been collaborating on several initiatives, including capacity-building for ministry technical staff on climate risk analysis and sharing hydro-meteorological data. Their partnership also involves integrating data on hazards, vulnerability, and food security, as well as sharing satellite and remote sensing data to support development planning and Cambodia's roadmap for the Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative.
