Fifteen (15) Royal turtles, including two sub-adult males and females and 13 juveniles, have been delivered to the National Aquaculture Research and Development Institute (NARDI) Samdech Techo Hun Sen by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Cambodia, in collaboration with the Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The transfer, taking place last week, aims to enable students to study their biology and breeding at the institute, covering around 30 hectares in Roka Kpos commune, Sa-ang district, Kandal province.
Transferring some of these Critically Endangered turtles to different locations for breeding will help protect and conserve the species from extinction, sad WCS Cambodia.
This marks the third assurance colony of its kind, following similar efforts at WCS's Koh Kong Reptile Conservation Centre in Koh Kong province and the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity in Siem Reap province, continued the sourcce, adding that WCS will provide technical support to ensure the reptiles remain healthy.
