Poipet:Banteay Meanchey: Flooding in Cambodia's northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey has led to the evacuation of over 1,300 families. These flash floods, caused by heavy rainfall and runoff from Thailand, have affected five city and districts in the province.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, a preliminary report by the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration indicated that five out of nine city and districts have been hit by the floods. The total number of impacted families exceeds 1,480, with more than 1,300 of them relocated to safe sites.
Poipet, a border city, has been severely affected, prompting local authorities to enhance emergency measures and evacuations. By 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, over 1,200 families from Poipet had moved to nine government shelters, while some sought refuge with relatives.
H.E. Pankhem Bunthan, Head of the Royal Government Working Group for Poipet, reported that while floodwaters in the city are receding, runoff from Thailand continues to affect infrastructure and nearby areas. Joint forces, including local authorities and the military, have been deployed with 45 rescue and inflatable boats provided by H.E. Ke Kim Yan to aid in evacuations.
The floods have also submerged over 12,000 hectares of rice fields, with nearly 100 hectares destroyed. Infrastructure, including schools, pagodas, health centers, and roads, has suffered damage. Banteay Meanchey Governor H.E. Oum Reatrey has ordered continuous monitoring of water levels and preparations for further evacuations should conditions deteriorate.
Emergency relief efforts are underway, providing food, medical supplies, and temporary shelter to those affected.
