Phnom penh: The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation this morning issued a clarification regarding the opinion article titled ‘Why Cambodia Must Never Forget,’ published in the Khmer Times on Oct. 7, 2025. The Spokesperson underlined that the views expressed in the article are solely those of the author and do not reflect, in any way, the official position or policy of the Royal Government of Cambodia.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the spokesperson emphasized the strong relationship between Cambodia and Japan, which is founded on mutual respect, trust, and a commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable development. Japan has been a key partner to Cambodia, providing significant Official Development Assistance (ODA) and supporting various sectors, including infrastructure development, human resource training, demining, healthcare, and education.
The spokesperson further noted the recent enhancement of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and the initiation of the Japan-Cambodia Economic Co-Creation Package in May 2025. This development underscores the robust and forward-looking nature of the partnership, with both countries collaborating on connectivity, green growth, digital transformation, and human capital development as part of Cambodia’s Pentagonal Strategy-Phase 1.
While acknowledging the importance of historical awareness, Cambodia’s policy is centered on reconciliation, cooperation, and a shared future. The partnership with Japan is based on sovereignty, mutual respect, and equality, serving as a model of constructive bilateral cooperation in the region, the spokesperson highlighted.
The Ministry reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to its relationship with Japan, emphasizing the aim to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the mutual benefit of both nations and their peoples.
