Thailand: A gunman opened fire and killed five people in a fresh food market in Bangkok on Monday, Thai authorities said. The victims include four security guards and a market vendor. The gunman took his own life after the shooting.
According to Deutsche Welle, the motive behind the attack is currently unclear, but Thai police have stated they are "investigating the identity of the person and the motive for the incident." Deputy police chief Worapat Sukthai of the Bang Sue district noted that authorities are working to identify the gunman and are also investigating "for any possible link" to the recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which concluded with a ceasefire later on Monday.
Despite Thailand's strict gun restrictions, gun ownership is not uncommon in the country. While mass shootings are rare, Thailand has witnessed several deadly incidents in recent years. In 2023, a 14-year-old used a modified handgun to kill two people and injure five others in a luxury mall in Bangkok. Just one year earlier, in 2022, one of the country's worst mass killings occurred when a former police sergeant killed 36 people after losing his job.
