Improved Connectivity Set to Unlock Economic Potential of Cambodia’s Northeast

Phnom penh: Improved transport infrastructure is expected to play a crucial role in unlocking the economic potential of Cambodia's northeastern region by boosting tourism, agriculture, and industrial development while strengthening connectivity with neighbouring Laos and Vietnam.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, speaking at the official inauguration ceremony of sections of National Road No. 73, Provincial Road No. 377, and Provincial Road No. 377A in Kratie provincial city, said improved roads and transport links would help drive the growth of the transport and logistics sectors.

The three road sections have a combined length of 98.405 kilometers and were financed through a concessional loan from the World Bank.

The Prime Minister emphasized that better connectivity will facilitate the movement of people, agricultural products, raw materials, and manufactured goods between Cambodia and its neighbouring countries, particularly Laos and Vietnam.

Improved transport infrastructure is also expected to increase the value of local production by reducing transport costs, improving access to raw materials, and expanding market connectivity for businesses in the northeastern provinces.

'The region has significant potential in tourism, agriculture, and industry, but improved connectivity will be essential to fully capitalize on these opportunities and integrate local production into wider domestic and regional supply chains,' Samdech Thipadei underlined.

As part of efforts to strengthen logistics infrastructure, Cambodia also plans to develop a multipurpose port in Kratie province, which is expected to provide another important gateway for transporting goods and supporting economic activities in the northeastern region.

Samdech Thipadei also highlighted investment incentives, including tax and customs measures, financing support, and the streamlining and reduction of administrative procedures, as important measures to encourage greater private-sector investment and accelerate regional economic development.

As of August 7, 2026, a total of 72 investment projects worth approximately US$2.7 billion had been proposed in Cambodia's four northeastern provinces, with the projects expected to generate more than 80,000 jobs.
