Phnom penh: Senior Minister Ly Thuch, today emphasised that the formidable challenge of landmine clearance extends beyond Cambodia's borders, asserting it as a collective global responsibility. His remarks came during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) Headquarters.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the MoU solidified a partnership between the CMAA, the Korea International Humanitarian Organisation (GPI), and Cambodian Self Help Demining (CSHD). This collaboration is set to bolster mine clearance operations in Siem Reap province, a region still severely impacted by landmines and explosive remnants of war.
Speaking on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Senior Minister Ly Thuch, who also serves as First Vice President of CMAA, extended profound gratitude to GPI for its dedication to humanitarian cooperation and peacebuilding through direct involvement in demining efforts. "Under the visionary leadership of Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the mine action sector is not merely viewed as a critical step toward ensuring public safety," stated H.E. Ly Thuch. "It is also recognised as a cornerstone for peacebuilding, food security, poverty reduction, development, and inclusive economic growth."
H.E. Ly Thuch underscored that contributions from international partners like GPI have been instrumental in saving lives, revitalising communities, and instilling renewed hope in families residing in contaminated areas. He further highlighted that this collaboration directly aligns with the Royal Government of Cambodia's aspiration for a mine-free future, where citizens can live without the constant threat of unexploded ordnance.
The MoU was formally signed by Mr. Ly Panharith, Secretary General of CMAA; Mr. Lee Jongsun, Vice President of GPI; and Ms. Ing Sokcheng, Executive Director of CSHD. This initiative specifically aims to enhance agricultural productivity and expand access to safe farmland for local communities in Siem Reap province.
This collaborative endeavour marks a significant stride in Cambodia's ongoing pursuit to eradicate the enduring vestiges of war, while simultaneously reinforcing the critical role of international solidarity in forging a safer and more secure future for all.
