LIS STUDENTS SHOWCASE CREATIVE SOLUTIONS AT CBL CONFERENCE

The Labuan International School (LIS) hosted its annual Challenge Based Learning (CBL) Conference, where 250 students participated in an innovation programme showcasing their creative solutions in current and environmental issues. Six standout innovations emerged from the conference and are poised to compete at the national level. LIS principal Fadlin Aimuni lauded the students' ingenuity, noting that six innovations were awarded the top honours among the 25 presented. Reflecting on LIS's past achievements, she disclosed their triumph at the 5th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) in 2020, where they clinched gold medals and special awards. "We will continue to nurture the creativity of our students to innovate sustainable and environmentally friendly products," she told Bernama after the conference at the LIS Auditorium here today. The winning innovations set for the national competition (Primary Top Three Best Challenges Award) are the 'Mini Maths', a clock designed to assi st kindergarten students in learning math in a quick and fun way; 'Sugar Guide Box', that educates children about sugar consumption in a fun and engaging way; and teaching kit (Pulley-18) for young children to learn and understand addition and subtraction. Meanwhile, the Secondary Top Three Best Challenges Award that will be competing in the national level are 'SOLDE', an eco-friendly cleaning detergent made with non-toxic and organic materials for household purposes; 'Periodic Pair-Up' (PPU), a gamification tool to boost students' understanding of the Periodic Table; and 'BALECO', an environmentally-free biodegradable container that will not harm the marine life which also acts as an alternative product for plastic containers made of banana leaves. She underscored the significance of collaboration and innovation in addressing contemporary challenges, highlighting the conference's role in showcasing the potential of young minds. "As students harness their creativity and problem-solving abilities, the futur e holds promise for innovative solutions to emerge,' she said. The CBL Conference, held in collaboration with the Labuan Financial Services Authority (Labuan FSA), Education Department, Department of Environment (DOE), Health Department, Lions Club and Etiqa Offshore Labuan, brought together students, aged 11 to 17, for an immersive, hands-on programme. Fadlin also said participants collaborated with peers, educators, and experts to tackle challenges inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, empowering them to utilise technology for positive change. She added that LIS students' achievements extend beyond the conference, with three Gold Medals secured at the International Conference of Education and Futuristic Innovation (ICEFI) 2023, and they also received a Special Award from the Indonesian Young Scientist Association at the World Youth STEM Invention Innovation 2023.
