LS Cable wins 280 bln-won submarine cable order in Belgium

LS Cable and System Ltd., South Korea's biggest cable company, said Thursday it has received a 280 billion-won (US$202 million) order to supply submarine cables to an artificial island in Belgium. In the deal with Belgium's electricity network operator Elia Group SA, LS Cable will provide undersea cables to Princess Elizabeth Island, the world's first energy island, to be built 45 kilometers off the Belgium coast, the company said in a statement. "The company will supply the subsea cables to the artificial energy island by 2027 as the island is scheduled to begin operations in 2030," a company spokesperson said. The artificial energy island will occupy an area of approximately 5 hectares above the waterline and will serve as the link between a 3.5 gigawatt offshore wind power plant and an onshore substation, it said.
