Phnom penh: H.E. Gen. Datuk Hj Mohd Nizam bin Hj Jaffar, Chief of Defence Force of Malaysia, held a pivotal bilateral meeting here this afternoon with H.E. Gen. Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), during an official working visit to Cambodia. H.E. Gen. Vong Pisen extended a warm welcome to his Malaysian counterpart, emphasising the timely nature of the visit, which aims to bolster the implementation of the ceasefire and restore stability along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, during the discussions, H.E. Gen. Vong Pisen formally requested Malaysia's support in facilitating and monitoring the ceasefire. He proposed the formation of observation teams to verify compliance, promote transparency and accountability, and foster lasting peace in the region.
In response, H.E. Gen. Datuk Hj Mohd Nizam bin Hj Jaffar reaffirmed the core objective of his visit: to ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement through robust procedures and coordinated mechanisms. He announced the immediate formation of two observation teams. One team will be led by the Malaysian defence attach© in Cambodia, and the other by the Malaysian defence attach© in Thailand.
Both teams are slated to commence official observation operations tomorrow. Following the high-level talks, H.E. Gen. Datuk Hj Mohd Nizam bin Hj Jaffar confirmed his immediate inspection visit tonight of the Cambodian-Thai border. There, he will conduct joint on-site assessments with senior Thai and Cambodian military commanders, including Thailand's First and Second Army Region Commanders and Cambodia's Fourth and Fifth Military Region Commanders.
H.E. Gen. Datuk Hj Mohd Nizam bin Hj Jaffar concluded by expressing strong optimism that sustainable peace can be achieved through sincere cooperation, mutual trust, and transparency among all involved parties.
