Mine Clearance Project in Thbong Khmum Province is 70% Complete

The mine clearance project in Thbong Khmum province have so far been about 70 percent complete.

The achievement was highlighted by H.E. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) while paying an inspection visit of the demining activities and holding a get-together with deminers of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines, and ERW Clearance (NPMEC) and local people in Chorm Kravean commune, Memut district, on Oct. 5.

Under Samdech Techo Project for Mine Action (STP-MA) themed “Providing Safe Ground, Creating smiles”, some 70 percent of the 4,687,317 square metres of mine-contaminated land in Thbong Khmum province have been cleared, discovering and destroying 76 anti-personnel mines, 15 anti-tank mines and 1,080 unexploded ordnances, he pointed out.

Thbong Khmum is expected to obtain the mine-free status within six months after the demining operations began in the province in July.

Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has appealed for a national movement to contribute to achieving the Kingdom’s goal of becoming a mine-free nation by 2025.
