Phnom penh: The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia has issued a statement of condemnation against the Thai military's aggressive and indiscriminate attacks on Cambodia.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the statement unequivocally condemns Thailand's armed aggression on Cambodia, involving the use of heavy weaponry, F-16 fighter jets, DTI-2 rockets, navy vessels, combat drones, 105mm and 155mm artillery, armored vehicles, cluster munitions, and toxic gas. These acts occurred across various locations along the Cambodia-Thailand border, penetrating approximately 80 to 90 kilometers into Cambodian territory.
The statement underscores that such aggressive actions represent a grave violation of Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It further highlights that these acts contravene international law, the Charter of the United Nations, the ASEAN Charter, and the spirit of the ASEAN Community, posing a significant threat to global and regional order and security.
The statement also detailed the human cost of the attacks, noting that the Thai military targeted not only military installations but also innocent civilians. This has resulted in 17 fatalities, 77 injuries, and the displacement of over 400,000 people. Additionally, the attacks have damaged and destroyed UNESCO world heritage sites and national historical cultural heritage, including the Preah Vihear Temple, Ta Krabey Temple, and Tamone Thom Temple, which hold significant religious and cultural importance.
Furthermore, the use of heavy weaponry and fighter jets has led to the destruction of critical civilian infrastructure, including homes, schools, hospitals, and other essential facilities. This destruction is a clear violation of international humanitarian law and the obligations regarding the protection of civilians and cultural property.
The National Assembly calls on Thailand to withdraw its military presence from Cambodian territory, cease the use of heavy weaponry, and halt any military operations endangering civilian lives. The statement urges Thailand to honor the Ceasefire Agreement, the Joint Declaration, and uphold its international obligations in good faith.
In conclusion, the National Assembly appeals to the international community to condemn Thailand's actions as inhumane and illegal. It calls for Thailand to be held fully accountable before international law for the destruction, violations, and war crimes inflicted upon Cambodia.
