National Bank of Cambodia and Bank of China Discuss Strategic Investment Expansion

Phnom penh: The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and a high-level delegation from the Bank of China (BOC) have convened for strategic talks aimed at exploring new investment opportunities and deepening bilateral financial cooperation within the Kingdom.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, NBC Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey received the BOC delegation, led by Mr. Sun Yu, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BOC (Hong Kong) Limited, at the NBC's headquarters in Phnom Penh on Mar. 18. The dialogue centred on Cambodia's evolving financial sector and prospects for the Chinese banking giant to expand its operational footprint.

During the meeting, Mr. Sun Yu briefed the NBC Governor on the performance and progress of BOC's existing operations in Cambodia. He reiterated the institution's commitment to supporting the nation's financial development, while underscoring its dedication to compliance with local regulatory frameworks.

The discussions yielded key areas of strategic focus: deliberations on introducing new financial tools to modernise and deepen the local market; initiatives aimed at bolstering the usage of the Cambodian Riel (KHR) in both cross-border and domestic financial transactions.

Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey welcomed BOC's expansion plans, emphasising the NBC's primary objectives of maintaining exchange rate stability and reinforcing overall financial resilience to underpin sustainable economic growth.

The Governor also provided insights into Cambodia's economic trajectory, acknowledging the Kingdom's growth potential while recognising prevailing global headwinds. She specifically identified geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in international oil prices as external factors requiring vigilant monitoring.
