NBC Celebrates 46 Years Since Khmer Riel’s Reintroduction

Phnom penh: The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) commemorated the 46th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Khmer Riel on March 20. The event underscored the significance of advocating for the national currency within Cambodia's economic and societal frameworks.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the celebration was presided over by H.E. Cheang Vun, Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee on Economy, Finance, Banking, and Auditing, at the Institute of Banking Studies. H.E. Yim Leat, Deputy Governor of NBC, shared insights from two research initiatives conducted by the NBC in coordination with the National Assembly and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cambodia.

The research featured a report on 'Dollarisation and Its Impact on Cambodia's Garment, Footwear, Travel Goods, and Bag Manufacturing Sector' and a survey focused on 'Currency Usage in the Public Sector.' The event included discussions on the theme 'Progress, Challenges, and Policies to Promote the Use of the Riel,' engaging senior officials from various sectors such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, and the Association of Banks in Cambodia.

The celebration aimed to enhance awareness about the Khmer Riel's importance and to foster its broader use. Attendees included representatives from the National Assembly, ministries, public institutions, development partners, banking and financial institutions, stakeholders, and approximately 250 students.
