(Olympics) Teen rifle shooter Ban Hyo-jin sets Olympic record in qualification

The 16-year-old South Korean shooter Ban Hyo-jin set an Olympic record in the qualification stage for the women's 10-meter air rifle at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. Ban won the qualification round with a score of 634.5 points at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre in Chateauroux, south of Paris. The previous Olympic record had been 632.9 points, set by Jeanette Hegg Duestad of Norway during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Ban is the youngest South Korean athlete competing at these Olympic Games. The high school student only picked up shooting during the Tokyo Games three years ago but will now have a chance to grab her first medal in the 10m air rifle final, scheduled for Monday. The top eight shooters qualified for the final. Another South Korean shooter, Keum Ji-hyeon, finished in ninth place at 630.9 points, only 0.4 point back of Oceanne Muller of France. Keum won the silver medal in the 10m air rifle mixed team event Saturday, alongside Park Ha-jun, for South Korea's very first medal of the Paris Games. Ban had been Park's partner in the weeks leading up to the Olympics, but the Korea Shooting Federation replaced her with Keum on Thursday, a move that paid immediate dividends.
