Phnom penh: The Anti-Fake News Commission of the Ministry of Information has identified and recorded a total of 1,053 cases of fake news as of the third quarter of 2025. Significantly, 857 of these cases were related to the Cambodia-Thailand border issue.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, most of these cases were reportedly generated by extremists and through the use of artificial intelligence, as stated by H.E. Tep Asnarith, the Under-Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Information. Speaking at a capacity-building workshop on information and public opinion in Prey Veng province, H.E. Tep Asnarith emphasized the negative impact of fake news on the morale of Cambodian soldiers and the disruption it causes to the technical and legal mechanisms employed by the Royal Government and relevant institutions to address border conflicts with Thailand.
H.E. Tep Asnarith highlighted the Ministry’s active efforts to counter fake news, particularly content originating from abroad, in collaboration with Meta (Facebook) and TikTok. He mentioned that the Ministry of Information, along with the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and the Ministry of Interior, has reported such content to Meta and TikTok for violating ethical standards and platform policies.
The Ministry reported that about 30 cases of fake or unethical content were resolved in collaboration with these companies, while 155 cases were addressed through cooperation with local account owners and social media page administrators.
