Phnom penh: Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has extended his congratulations and shared reflections on the 75th anniversary of Cambodia's accession to UNESCO, celebrating the milestone from July 3, 1951, to July 3, 2026.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Prime Minister, through a social media post, highlighted Cambodia's achievements since joining UNESCO. The country has successfully registered a total of 14 heritage elements across UNESCO's Tangible Cultural Heritage List, Intangible Cultural Heritage List, and the Memory of the World Register. These inscriptions play a crucial role in preserving the authentic forms of Cambodian culture, safeguarding the invaluable legacy of Khmer ancestors, and protecting the nation's historical memory.
The Tangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity includes the Angkor Archeological Park, listed on December 14, 1992, the Preah Vihear Temple on July 7, 2008, the Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex on July 8, 2017, and the Koh Ker Archeological Site on September 17, 2023. In terms of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Cambodia celebrates the recognition of the Preah Reach Troap Dance (Royal Ballet), Lkhon Sbek Thom (big shadow puppet theatre), Tean Prot (tug-of-war), Chapei Dang Veng (two-stringed, long-necked guitar), Lkhon Khol Wat Svay Andet, Kun Lbokator (traditional martial art), and Krama Khmer (Cambodian scarf).
Additionally, the Memory of the World Register includes the Tuol Sleng Genocide Archives, the Audio file of Reamker by Ta Krut, and the story of Inav Bosiba. These elements collectively underline the rich cultural tapestry and historical significance of Cambodia on a global scale.
Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei emphasized the importance of cultural heritage preservation, stating, "The protection of cultural heritage is the duty of all Cambodians." UNESCO, established on November 16, 1945, continues its mission to maintain global peace and security through fostering international cooperation in education, science, culture, and communication.
