PM Hun Manet: Ceasefire Brings Hope for Both Cambodians and Thais

Phnom penh: Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet announced this afternoon that the positive outcome of the special meeting in Malaysia benefits both Cambodia and Thailand, particularly civilians affected by the recent border clashes.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Hun Manet spoke at a press conference following the special meeting, which was hosted by Malaysia and co-organised by the United States, with active participation from the People's Republic of China. He described the ceasefire as 'a very positive result.' He stated, "Today we had a very good meeting and very good results that we hope will immediately end the fighting which has caused many deaths, injuries, and the displacement of about 300,000 people-around 140,000 on the Cambodian side and 160,000 on the Thai side."

Hun Manet expressed confidence that the meeting's achievements would provide numerous opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people on both sides to return to normalcy. He emphasized that this development would mark the end of the fighting between Cambodia and Thailand and the beginning of rebuilding trust, confidence, and future cooperation.

He expressed hope that the solutions announced by Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim would serve as a foundation for renewed bilateral dialogue and a step toward future military de-escalation between the two nations. The Cambodian Premier also extended sincere thanks to H.E. Anwar for hosting the urgent meeting and for his personal efforts in mediating an immediate ceasefire.

Hun Manet expressed deep gratitude to Honorable President Donald Trump for his decisive mediation on July 26, noting that Cambodia values the U.S. Government's support for peace and appreciates its role in organizing the crucial meeting. He also thanked the Government of China for its effort and active involvement in achieving the positive outcome now agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand.

Additionally, he praised Thai Acting Prime Minister H.E. Phumtham Wechayachai for his constructive role in the dialogue that led to the immediate ceasefire, which takes effect tonight at midnight, and the opening of military-to-military engagement starting tomorrow morning.

H.E. Phumtham Wechayachai expressed his appreciation to H.E. Prime Minister Anwar, the Government of China, and Honorable President Trump for their concern and support for the agreement. He stated, "This reflects Thailand's commitment to a peaceful resolution to protect our sovereignty and the lives of our people."

After five days of armed clashes along the border, Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire beginning at midnight tonight.
