Phnom penh: The 11th Japanese Film Festival in Cambodia has commenced, serving as a powerful diplomatic and cultural platform underscoring the enduring strategic friendship between Cambodia and Japan.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the annual cinematic event, which runs from Dec. 5 to 14, was officially launched at a ceremony on Dec. 5 evening, attended by key governmental and diplomatic figures. In her keynote address, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona emphasised the festival's role as a "vivid reflection of the long-standing and close relationship between Cambodia and Japan." She described the initiative as an "important platform for further strengthening cultural cooperation," highlighting its strategic importance beyond mere entertainment.
"Beyond fostering people-to-people exchanges, the festival promotes broader mutual understanding and meaningful partnerships across multiple sectors," H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona stated. The Minister added that the cultural exchange directly contributes to enhancing Cambodia-Japan bilateral relations while also playing a vital role in local capacity building, specifically in advancing the knowledge, skills, and professional experience of Cambodian filmmakers.
The opening night drew a distinguished audience, including Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Ueno Atsushi, Japan Foundation Phnom Penh Office Director Mr. Isogaya Hiroyuki, senior Cambodian officials, and members of the diplomatic corps. The festival will feature a curated selection of acclaimed Japanese films, with all screenings offered free of charge to the Cambodian public, thereby reinforcing cultural accessibility through the universal medium of cinema.
